Emeritus Professors & Emeritus Associate Professors

Appointment

Elected by Senate.

Definition

A retired Professor or Associate Professor who has been elected to this rank by Senate. The necessary qualification for this is

  1. retired Professors or Associate Professors who served for at least ten years as a Professor (or Associate Professor and Professor) at least five of which shall have been continuous immediately prior to retirement either in a full-time or a part-time capacity; or
  2. any retired Professor or Associate Professor specially elected by Senate on the recommendation of the Honorary Degrees Committee.

Status

Retired staff member who retains this special rank until death.

All emeritus staff are retained as active members of the University on the HR data base. They are members of Convocation by virtue of their emeritus status.

(Emeritus Professors and Emeritus Associate Professors rank, in so far as the printed order and the position in academic processions are concerned, senior to Professor and Associate Professor respectively and junior to members of Council).

Rights or privileges

  • General

    The right to use the tile of Emeritus Professors or Emeritus Associate Professor, this includes the right to use the title in publications and official ceremonies. The right to continue to supervise doctoral students. The right to a staff card, access to facilities, the right to purchase parking discs and such other rights as the Council may from time to time decide.

    May apply for URC research funds on proof of accredited peer-reviewed publications in the past year.

  • ICTS rights: UCT email account and see UCT role model: Staff.
  • Library rights: As for academic staff.
  • Access control rights: Staff card or other access as determined by HOD.
  • Decision rights on (research) funds: May be granted by ED Finance on application to ED Finance if supported by Dean of Faculty/CHED/GSB.
  • Space: At discretion of HOD & Dean.
  • Right to apply for equipment: No
